Faraday cage. How it works

On the Internet you can see various shows called “Tesla Coil and Faraday Cage”. In this show, people enter a metal cage and high-voltage sparks strike the cage, but these sparks do not touch or hit people. What’s the matter? But the fact is that people are inside a Faraday cage. In this article I will show you how to make a Faraday cage on your desk and conduct visual experiments with it.
How does a Faraday Cage work? An external electric field causes the electrical charges inside the conductive material of the cage to be distributed so that they neutralize the effect of the field inside the cage. This phenomenon is used to protect sensitive electronic equipment (for example, radio frequency receivers) from external radio frequency interference. The cage must be closed and can be made of solid metal or in the form of a mesh.
I will make a Faraday cage from a mesh and a piece of aluminum foil. I used the mesh from aluminum, it can be obtained from air purification filters. To visually observe the operation of the cage, you need a sensitive device that will respond to the electromagnetic field. I made it using one Darlington transistor ksp13 .You also need a high voltage source, which should produce sparks and discharges. I completed it according to this article.

First, we check the operation of the device on ksp13. If there are high-voltage discharges or electromagnetic field radiation near the device, the device will notify you of this by lighting an LED.

I placed a piece of open mesh next to the device. As you can see, the signal passes through such a “cage” and the LED lights up. This is not a Faraday cage.

Now the grid is closed, but I did not close the cage on top

If you hit an open Faraday cage with a discharge from the side, the electromagnetic field will weakly penetrate inside and the LED will not light up.

But the Faraday cage is not closed from above and the electromagnetic field gets inside and the LED shines

Now I have closed everything completely and it turned out to be a real Faraday cage

The electromagnetic field does not enter inside such a cage and the LED does not shine. Also, high voltage discharges will not enter inside. If you make the cage larger, you can place a radio inside and it will not receive radio stations.
